Chess is firmly established as one of the most successful areas of school life at Woodbridge. The club was only founded in 2000, but now is one of the very few in the country to have a full-time chess teacher, International Master Adam Hunt. Chess is offered as an activity at Queens House, The Abbey and the Senior School with children from Year 3 onwards able to take private lessons with Mr Hunt.

Chess clubs after school at The Abbey and the Senior School are also open to children from the local community who are interested in improving their game, and the Sports Dome hosts one major tournament a term, including the Suffolk Junior championships in January/February. The school participates in the Suffolk schools league, the Suffolk adult league and the National schools championships at primary and senior levels.

Woodbridge is officially recognised by the English Chess Federation as a centre of excellence with three England internationals coming from Woodbridge in as many years and many county champions of all ages. The School has represented England at the World schools chess championships in Turkey and is planning an exchange with a chess academy from the Czech Republic in 2010. Woodbridge also awards the Tony Miles Chess Scholarship to exceptional students from Year 7+.

The club also has its own website, www.woodbridgechess.com. If you are interested in finding out more about chess at Woodbridge, please contact the Director of Chess, Adam Hunt by e-mail or telephone 01394 615000.
