Sports Leadership Scheme - a leader in the region

Highlights from this year have included:
  • An increased number of leaders (41 at max) has allowed a much larger participation across both Woodbridge and local community sport.
  • A variety of nationally recognised schemes have been taught to both Woodbridge and local primary pupils allowing a range of new sports to be offered.
  • Ceaderwood Primary has become the latest primary school to be added to the current format – with partnerships reaching their fifth year with Woodbridge Primary & Kyson Primary.
  • We still cater for well over 200 pupils each Friday afternoon offering a breadth of sports far in excess of the KS1+2 curriculum whilst also allowing them the opportunity to use our facilities if required.
Areas covered this year:

We continue to offer a variety of sports alongside our major sports, such as golf, swimming through to orienteering, tennis and athletics. With lower age groups now increasingly covered (even to Year 1) a range of physical literacy skills have been adopted as our major focus. These fundamental ‘movement building blocks' now form the central core to our work with the younger primary pupils, allowing them to gain confidence from their improved abilities to run, catch, throw and jump. Additionally, this allows our Sports Leaders an almost unparalleled ability to teach across the Year 1 - 9 age range. This obviously presents a real challenge and requires a vast degree of teaching abilities and strategies in order to lead a safe, enjoyable session in which children are able to learn and succeed.

The fifth annual Woodbridge v Kyson sports fixtures (hockey, rugby) took place, both organised and umpired/refereed by our sports leaders. With further ‘Sports Hall Olympics’ delivered both in and out of school.

As a whole:

The programme continues to thrive in terms of ‘sportsleader’ numbers and is heavily appreciated amongst local primary schools (by pupils and staff alike). The new leaders coming through exhibit fine leadership skills and are very keen to branch out into more ‘community orientated’ projects to go alongside the inter-primary events, or school related events such as Sports Days.

It is quite superb to observe the change in both confidence and ability of the leaders as they move through the programme and this central thrust of enthusiasm remains the core feature within it.
