Message from The Master
Senior School Entrance Examination
Well done to all our Year 6 pupils for all the hard work and time they spent in preparation for the Senior School Entrance Exam and I am delighted that all who took the exam were successful. I would also like to thank the Abbey staff and parents for all their support and help with the Year 6 pupils at this time. Many congratulations to the following pupils who won awards: Sophie Little, Oliver Bacon, James Eaton, James Phelan, Jemima Hill, Zara Lye, Alex Rolph, Eloise Carter, Georgia Harrold, Cameron Jordan, Madelaine Felton, Louisa Falconer, Laurie Bertram and Mia King.
Open Morning
A reminder that all Abbey pupils are expected to attend Open Morning tomorrow. Pupils should arrive for registration at 9.15 am, smartly dressed with neat hair and polished shoes, and will be ready for collection at 12 noon. All parents, grandparents, friends and families are very welcome to come along and join us for the morning.
English Speaking Board Examination
Well done to all our Year 5 pupils who worked so hard in preparing for the ESB exam just before half term and thank you to all the staff and parents who helped the children and enabled them to perform so well. Having had both my daughters participate in ESB exams, I can speak from experience of how valuable these exams are in building confidence and speaking skills that will last through the pupils’ school careers, through university and beyond.
Year 6 Lunchtime Recital
Thank you to all our Year 6 pupils who gave wonderful performances in the recent lunchtime recital. These recitals provide great opportunities for our children to share their music with each other and give them the chance to perform in front of friends and families. At the time of going to print, I am looking forward to the Year 5 lunchtime recital.
Mufti Day
I am always overwhelmed and extremely grateful for the generosity that our pupils and parents show to any charity that we, as a school, support. On the Friday before half term, the pupils (and staff) turned out in purple and multi-coloured clothing in aid of ‘Dogs for the Disabled’ and we raised a total of £405.14. Well done to all the children who baked and sold cakes or ran their own schemes to raise money for this charity. I am very pleased that representatives from Canine Partners will be coming to do a special assembly for the pupils on Thursday, 29 March to help the children understand how important dogs can be for members of the community.
School Council Meeting
Thank you to those pupils who recently gave up their lunchtime to represent their year groups at our School Council meeting. I very much appreciate your commitment, and your views and opinions about the school are invaluable. I was impressed by the mature and sensible way you conducted yourselves during discussion and I look forward to seeing even more pupils at the next meeting.
The Abbey Cross Country
Congratulations to all our Abbey pupils who took part in these races. We had some fantastic results and exciting finishes, but I would like to thank all our pupils for the wonderful way you supported and looked after each other during this event. Well done.

Match Reports
U11 A Netball v Orwell Park
Owing to the snow we had to play inside, which we were pleased about as it was freezing outside. In the first quarter we were in the lead 3 – 2, as a result of quick passing up the court and accurate shooting from Sophia Ogilvie and Maddie Felton. The match just got closer and closer and we were becoming a little worried as we got to the final quarter with the score at 6 – 6! We went up a gear, completely determined to win. We fought for every ball and every shot at goal went in. The defence worked hard too, not letting Orwell shoot in this final quarter. Mrs Baylis said this was our best game so far. The final score was a win for The Abbey 10 – 6 to us.

U11 E Boys’ Hockey v Felsted
We were playing a home match against Felsted. Our players were Cole Turnbull in goal, Leo and I as defenders and midfielders were Alex Weir-Simmons and Joshua Graves. Left wing was Tom Brierly and right wing was Campion Mitchell Cotts. We decided we didn’t want to start off with the Hockey ball so we let Felsted start with the ball. The whistle blew and we started. After about 3 minutes we tackled them, then 5 minutes after that Tom took a shot but the keeper saved it. Alex got the rebound and was literally 10cm away from the goal and we were clean through! Bang! Alex had slotted it into the top corner. GOAL! Mr Simpson was full of joy!
The ball went back to the middle. Whistle! They passed loads of times but we couldn’t tackle them. Then they were clean through. I got desperate. Their man took a shot. It was going towards the goal, but luckily I got a tip to it, making it a short corner. It was then Alex who ran up the pitch to get to the D area. He demonstrated many skills to get past the opposition to the D. Their keeper came out and Alex decided not to hit straight at the keeper so he went the other way. It went into the bottom corner. GOAL!
The ball went back to the middle once again. We ran at them and got the ball. We had a few attempts at goal but missed, not by much! Oh dear, they were running and I was desperately trying to get to them. NO! It was too late and they had scored.
Straight after the goal it was half time so Mr Simpson made a few changes as he had done in the first half of the match. I didn’t come off in the first half and I knew it was my turn soon so I tried to make the best of my time left on the pitch. The whistle went for the second half and we started with the ball. We did a few nice push passes by (Mr Simpson told us to do lots of them!), but after a while we lost the ball again and I was the only defender at the back. Joshua Graves ran back as well, but it was only us!. I tackled and whacked the ball up the pitch to Tom and he softly put it in the back of the goal. Five minutes later the game had finished and we had won 3-1! We were all very pleased and so was Mr Simpson. I think it was a good match overall!

U8 National Schools Tag Rugby Tournament at Epsom College
The Abbey played Orchard House, St Columba and Rokeby School. All the matches were very close and the boys scored some good tries as well as defending well. Even though they didn’t make it through to the next round it was an amazing experience for them and a lot of lessons were learnt.
IAPS Eastern Region Swimming Finals
Last Monday we travelled to Bishop’s Stortford for the Eastern Region Swimming Finals. Our team was quite experienced and thanks to our hours of practice we managed to record some fine results. Harry Fosker, Tom Beagley and Alex Weir-Simmons won their individual events. Michael Donovan, Joanne Garnett, Katy Garnett, Maria Donovan, Amy Graham and Maud Peel came 2nd in theirs.
Our U10 and U11 boys won their medley and freestyle relays with the U10 girls finishing 2nd in both of their races.
We managed to swim some competitive times and we are now waiting to see if our times have qualified us for the National Finals in May.

Chess
The 2012 Suffolk Junior Chess Open took place on Sunday, 4 March at the Senior School. The pupils from both The Abbey and Senior School did extremely well and some were crowned champions for their age groups.
Well done to all those in Year 3 who participated from The Abbey. Tom Turner, Talia Fawcett, Katie Bellhouse and Henry King gave their all on the day and won the team award for their effort. Congratulations to Tobias Juszt who, in his first out-of-school tournament, came second, narrowly missing out on becoming the U8 Suffolk Junior Champion.
In the U10’s section the tournament was tight at the top and, unfortunately, the Abbey participants couldn’t quite catch the favourites in order to take the top spots. However, our Year 4’s all battled extremely well with 4 managing to finish joint top of the U9 section. A big ‘well done’ to Rowan Mitchell Cotts, Giles Kelleway, Zoe Newman and Rohan Franklin. Rowan took the U9 title on tie break.
In the U12 section our Year 6 pupils battled against the previous year’s top players for the big prizes. Hugo Kelleway (Year 7, Senior School) stormed into the lead with 4.5/5, but suffered a defeat to Nathan Lloyd (also in Year 7) in the final round, causing a 5-way tie for first for the players who made it to 4.5/6. James Phelan and Campion Mitchell Cotts held their nerve in the final round to catch the leaders, winning their games and coming joint top in the U11 section. Campion took the title and the trophies on tie break. Really impressive performances by both players!
I hope all who participated enjoyed the tournament!

The Swing Band
Year 2 went to the Senior School to listen to the Swing Band:
The swing Band is brilliant. It has lots of different instruments and I like the electric guitar and the drums. I want to be in it when I am older.
The conductor is called Mr Shepherd and he is really good at the trumpet as well as conducting. They are so good I do not think they need to practise.

I like the swing band. It was brilliant, especially the trombone and the drums. My favourite piece of music was Boogie Woogie.
