U8 Girls’ High Five Holmwood House Tournament
Congratulations to our Girls’ U8 High Fives’ team who won the Holmwood House Tournament last Saturday. This was an exciting event with eight prep schools taking part and the girls won, beating two teams from St Margaret’s Prep School, Felsted Prep and New Hall Prep. This was a superb achievement and a full report follows below.
Year 5 Lunchtime Recital
I should like to say thank you to all the Year 5 pupils who performed in their Lunchtime Recital on 8 March. Congratulations to all the participants who played beautifully and thank you to all their friends and parents who came along to listen and support them.
Easter Instrumental Concert
Still on the musical theme, well done to all the pupils who participated in our Easter Instrumental Concert. There was a huge variety of pieces that were played and I was very impressed and felt extremely proud of the standard that the children had reached. Listening to the recorder groups, woodwind and brass group, quartets and orchestras, I had to remind myself that the average age of the performers was 10 years. This is a phenomenal achievement. Thank you to Mrs Catherine Parker and all the music teachers who have put so much time and effort into ensuring the standard of music and level of enjoyment remains high.
Open Morning
Thank you to all the pupils and staff for making our recent Open Morning so successful. We were delighted to welcome parents and families along with many visitors who had not been to The Abbey before. The school looked glorious in the sunshine, the children looked smart and were extremely helpful and polite to all the visitors. Well done.
Equestrian Success
Congratulations to our Abbey Equestrian team who won the mini eventer trial at the Inter Schools’ One Day Event at Poplar Park. Well done to Tessa Lye, Zara Lye, Tabitha Billingham and Eloise Carter who all rode superbly to gain victory for the team. We also had some good individual successes which are mentioned in Miss Theobald’s report below.
East Anglian Cross Country Championships
I should like to thank the Abbey pupils and sports staff who gave up their time to represent our school at this event. It was a very cold, wet day and our teams showed tremendous courage and determination on what was quite a gruelling course at Framlingham College. I was extremely proud of all the team members for the huge effort that went into competing. Special mention must go to Nathan Goddard, who came 3rd in the U10 boys’ race, to our U10 boys’ team who came 3rd and the girls’ teams who came 3rd overall. I should also like to thank the parents and siblings for their valued support on this day.
The Abbey Piano Competition
Well done to every Abbey and Queen’s House pupil who took part in the Piano Competition last Friday. With nearly 70 pupils participating, it was a tremendous effort by all and I am very grateful to Mrs Catherine Parker for organizing such an enormous musical event and to Mrs Harriet Bennett, our adjudicator for the morning.
U11 National Schools’ Biathlon Finals
Congratulations to the U11 Boys’ Biathlon team of Cavan Fawcett, Michael Donovan and Tom Beagley who finished 3rd in the country. Well done boys. Report to follow.

All pupils should be in full summer uniform by Tuesday, 8 May, following the Bank Holiday. However, please note that for the whole school photograph on Wednesday, 21 April, Abbey pupils must wear their winter uniform.

U11 National Schools’ Biathlon Finals
Last Sunday the U11 Boys’ Biathlon team of Cavan Fawcett, Michael Donovan and Tom Beagley travelled to Crystal Palace in London for the National Schools’ Biathlon Finals. The first event was the 500 m run on the stadium’s athletics track. The pace was quick but Cavan managed to record a creditable 22nd place, Michael and Tom weren’t far behind. The team then went indoors for their 50 m swim. Tom came 19th and Michael and Cavan both recorded respectable times. After a nervous wait, whilst the scores were calculated, we found out that the team had finished 3rd in the country. A great result.

U11/U10 Old School Henstead Fun Afternoon of Netball
We played inside which we were pleased with as it was freezing cold outside. The warmth helped our fingers to catch the ball more easily. Beth was a shooter and she scored some great goals, and Freya as Goal Keeper stopped some going in by jumping up and pushing the ball away! We enjoyed playing netball with Henstead and we hope they will come again. The winning team was the Green Team with Christine Evans, Rosa McInerney, Eleanor Fitzgerald and Emelia Leggett in it.

U11/U10 Fun Afternoon of Netball with St Mary’s Primary
This was one of the best afternoons of netball we have had with St Mary’s. The level of play was high and there was plenty of movement around the court. Quick accurate passes from the teams and high scores made all the matches very exciting. The winning team was the Blue Team, in second place the Yellow Team and in joint third the Green and Red Teams. The winners from the Blue Team were Rosa McInerney, Lila Walker, Lily Butler-Mayer and Freya Finlay Jackson. We enjoyed meeting them again, having match tea and playing thrilling netball.

U8 High Five Tournament at Holmwood House
On Saturday, 18 March seven Year 3 girls travelled to the Holmwood House High Five tournament to play against teams including Holmwood House, Felsted, New Hall and St Margaret's. The girls were very excited and a little nervous. The day was graced with possibly the most unpleasant weather we have experienced this year; driving rain and a cold, gusting wind. The girls warmed up quickly and independently, they listened carefully to instructions and practised a few set plays before the games began.
The first match was against St Margaret’s A team. The girls found their form quickly and Ella Walker and Emily Whyte shot accurately and we won the 12 minute game 2-0. Next was New Hall. This was a harder match especially as the rules state that the girls have to change positions every half of each game, so they were all playing out of position, but the girls kept their nerve and battled hard. The final score was 2-2. Our third match was Felsted, who were a lovely team. We won 6-2.
The play-offs were then played to find out who was in first position and who was second. The game was between the winners of the first pool (The Abbey) and the winners of the second pool (St Margaret's B). The weather really came into its own at this point, sending umbrellas flying and leaving the children shivering in their very wet trainers. The match was fair in that neither team could really catch a ball nor see properly. The final score was 2-2 despite multiple attempts at goal in both semi-circles. The final decision came down to goal difference, The Abbey had scored 12 and St Margaret’s had scored 7 goals, so The Abbey won.
A big thank you to Mr and Mrs Longbon and Mrs Walker for cheering and encouraging the girls when they must have been frozen, real Abbey spirit!
The U9 team: Emily Whyte, Ella Walker, Olivia Buchanan (c), Jessica Elmer, Ariane Bilgen, Katie Bellhouse and Scarlett Longbon.

Suffolk Show Jumping Championships in Bury St Edmunds
On Sunday, 11 March eleven Woodbridge School riders competed in the Suffolk Show Jumping Championships in Bury St Edmunds. It was our first outdoor competition of 2012 and all riders certainly proved to be on form. Some good riding helped us achieve a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th team placing in 3 different height classes. Well done to the riders from The Abbey - Tessa Lye, Eloise Carter and Zara Lye.
Inner-Schools Annual One Day Event at Poplar Park
What a fantastic day for The Abbey riders - winning the mini eventer trial at the Inter Schools One Day Event at Poplar Park on Sunday, 18 March. All four of our riders (Zara Lye, Tessa Lye, Tabitha Billingham, Eloise Carter) rode lovely clear rounds in the show jumping and the cross country sections. There were 15 teams from all over East Anglia taking part in this competition. Our riders looked smart and rode in great style. Eloise also claimed a 3rd in the individual and Zara a 6th. In the Novice section of the One Day Event Zara joined the Woodbridge School riders in a team and came 2nd out of 29. A record number of teams entered this year! Zara was also 3rd individually in her section. Well done girls.

Reception Visit to Aldeburgh Lifeboat Station
On Thursday 15 March, Reception enjoyed an exciting morning at Aldeburgh Lifeboat Station. The children had great fun exploring the lifeboat and caterpillar tractor, which is used to tow the lifeboat out to sea. Members of the lifeboat crew gave an informative talk and the teachers had an opportunity to dress up in all the wet weather lifeboat gear! Thank you to all the children who made a donation to the RNLI during our visit. The excellent weather allowed everyone to sail their model boats on the yacht pond. A delicious packed lunch and a run on the beach finished a great day out!
