Message from The Master
Carol Services
I would like to say thank you to all the staff and pupils at Queen’s House and The Abbey who were involved in the carol services at the end of last term. It was obvious how hard everyone had worked and the singing, reading and acting were superb. It was wonderful to see so many of you taking part. Well done and thank you.
Year Six
I would like to wish all our Year Six pupils every success in the exams that they will be taking shortly. Keep working hard and do your very best in the exams. Good luck.
Welcome to the Gaps
Welcome to our new Gap students who joined the school community in January: Jason Jennings (South Africa), Nicholas Preddey (Australia), Lucy Bardsley (Australia), Margo Staffen (South Africa) and Brianna Wade (Australia). I am sure everyone will join me in hoping that you really enjoy your year with us.
Congratulations to Pupils
I am very pleased to be able to congratulate a number of our pupils who have won awards in their extra activities:
Tabitha Billingham took part in the Norfolk Indoor Athletics County Championships at the UEA and was awarded Gold Medal for the 2 Lap Hurdles, Silver for the 2 Lap Sprint, Bronze for the Speed Bounce and Bronze for the Standing Long Jump – a brilliant effort.
Sophia Ogilvie represented the school in the finals of the Suffolk Schools’ Cross Country held at the Royal Hospital School and finished 10th, which was a fantastic result.
Katie Hackman swam in the Leiston Swimming Club Championships and came 2nd in Butterfly, 6th in the 100m Front Crawl and 5th in the 50m Back Stroke, which was a great achievement.
Our Chess pupils have also been hard at work in competitions and I would like to congratulate Alex Rolph, Campion Mitchell Cotts, Sam Bryant and Giles Kelleway for their successes in the London Junior Chess Championships held on 17 and 18 December. The boys were facing the top chess talent in the country in this event and will have gained very valuable experience from competing. A special mention should go to Alex and Campion for the 4 points and 3.5 points they scored in their respective tournaments - a great effort.
These are super accomplishments and you should all be very proud of your efforts. Well done.
Open Morning, Saturday, 10 March
All pupils of The Abbey are expected to attend our Open Morning which runs from 9.30 am until 12 noon (registration will be earlier and the pupils will be informed of timings nearer the event). We should be delighted to welcome all families and friends and prospective pupils to the morning and hope that you will enjoy sharing part of our school day with us.
Representing the School
Please may I remind parents that if your child is selected for a team, either during the week or at a weekend, they are expected to play. There have been occasions when a team has been let down and this must be avoided in the future. Please will parents refer to our Abbey calendar on a regular basis so that you are aware of events that your child may be involved in.
Message from The Abbey Office
If your child is absent for any reason, please contact The Abbey Office before 9am. Thank you.

Lost Kit
Please could parents regularly check that their child’s uniform and games kit is their own. If a child has another pupil’s clothing, please return it to school immediately to save other parents unnecessarily looking for lost kit or buying more.

Charities
At our Michaelmas Term Choral Concert we raised £544.33 for St Mary’s Church Tower. The cheque was presented to The Reverend Canon Kevan McCormack at our church assembly on Tuesday, 24 January. The Reverend Canon Kevan McCormack expressed his gratitude and explained to the children how the money was going to be spent.
At our Christmas Carol Service we raised £645.85 for Action for Children. With many thanks to all who gave generously to these two worthy charities.
Match Reports
U11 A Netball v Brandeston Hall
The Abbey lost 4 - 13
U11 B Netball v Brandeston Hall
This was an extremely close match as The Abbey won 5 – 4. At the end of the first quarter we were winning 2 – 0, but Brandeston got back on their feet and started scoring some goals. This made our shooters sit up and they scored a third goal. Our shooters were Ellie Kilburn and Jemima Hill. It was a close call, but, as a result of some good defending by Louise Farthing, Emily Webb, Sophie Little and Mollie Biddle, we kept the ball out of the net. Florence Jackson, our Centre, was great at snatching the ball in the air and Tabitha Billingham, as Wing Attack, was amazing at sprinting up and down the court intercepting the ball and passing it quickly. It was a tight, but thrilling match - a great way to start the netball season.

U11 Football v Old School Henstead
We went to Old School Henstead for a football match. We had Campion in goal, defending him were Beau and Jonty, midfielders were me, James, Leo and Harry and strikers were Sam and Hugo. At the start of the first half I was shaking like a leaf! Whistle! We had started! Sam and Hugo kept passing and using team tactics. I was speeding alongside them on the wing with James speeding alongside on the left wing. Ten minutes later Hugo shoots, their keeper saves it, but he couldn’t quite hold on so he dropped it. James got onto it and shot with power. GOAL! Then later on Cavan, Sam, Hugo and Leo attempted some more shots but they didn’t quite make it! Whistle! End of the first half and we were 1-0 up, but we knew that wasn’t enough. So we thought about trying even harder even though we already had a goal! Whistle! Second half. We changed positions so that Beau and John were in James’ and my position. Sam and Hugo did lots of passing to each other. After 10 minutes I had changed position to striker. Two minutes later I saw the opposition coming towards Campion! Oh dear! BANG! They shot, Campion made a brilliant save, but he couldn’t hold on to the ball! It deflected off Campion and went to their player, then they whacked it and scored! Oh dear! With only five minutes left Mr Simpson was upset! He thought we couldn’t do it in five minutes. Three minutes later Hugo shot, the keeper saved it, but couldn’t hold on and luckily I was there to get the rebound. I got the tip of my boot to it. But where had the ball gone? It was a GOAL! Mr Simpson was full of joy! There was no coming back for them! Mr Simpson said that had made his weekend! Two minutes later it was the end of the match and 2-1 to us!

News From Queen’s
Medieval Murder Mayhem!
On Wednesday, 11 January 2012, the Year 1 children arrived at Queen’s House braced for battle! Kitted out in medieval attire, the peasants were prepared to embark on a journey through medieval times, from 440AD, to learn about Castle life. Sir Teachalot, a real knight visiting for the day, instructed the young squires how to be armed, armoured and protected in order to be brave enough to fight dragons, engage in battle and defend castles and lives. He demonstrated various styles of weaponry, even shooting a bow and arrow across the hall, narrowly missing the peasants. Sir Teachalot explained the shape and styles of shields used as well as all the amazing medieval protective clothing worn in battlement. A number of children had the chance to try out shields, swords, helmets and chained vests. Mrs Saunders and Mr Thorley certainly looked the part as they were dressed in full armour! Castle Ford and Castle Walker competed in a jousting contest riding upon a huge warhorse and causing great excitement. In the afternoon, the young squires built a castle from scratch and then took great pleasure in destroying it! A great day was enjoyed by all.
